What Is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a condition that can occur in pregnant women in the second half of pregnancy. The condition is related to heightened protein levels in the mother's urine, which can lead to devastating and dangerous consequences for the liver, kidney and brain. Preeclamsia is associated with a number of birth conditions like low birth weight, premature birth and stillborn babies. In extreme stages, some women develop HELLP syndrome, which is an acronym for: hemolysis; elevated; liver enzymes and low platelets. This syndrome puts both mom and baby at risk for more serious conditions than preeclampsia. Your blood is periodically tested for this syndrome if you develop preeclampsia.

Eclampsia

In some cases, preeclampsia can turn into eclampsia, which can cause seizures and is extremely severe for the mom and baby. The warning signs for eclampsia include:

  • Difficulty with vision
  • Serious and persistent headaches
  • Abdominal pain
